UK Roadworks Ltd - Surface Dressing, Tar & Chip

Surface Dressing is ideal for:

Private Roads, Car Parks, Farm Tracks, Tracks and Driveways.

It is ideal surface for heavy duty vehicles.

Surface Dressing

Surface dressing involves an application of a layer of hot bitumen (also known as tar) from a spray tanker. Then this is immediately followed by a layer of washed aggregate chippings, which come in different sizes and colour. The road is then power rolled to ensure the aggregate is adhered to the bitumen surface.

It is carried out annually by local councils across the UK as a means of extending the life of roads, preventing cracks and maintaining safety. It is also ideal for private roads, car parks, farm tracks, tracks and driveways. There is a choice of chippings – grey granite (10 or 6mm size) or a golden flint (10 or 6mm size).

This form of surface dressing is usually sanctioned annually by local councils across the UK.  It is a means of extending the life of roads, preventing cracks and, therefore, maintaining safety.

Surface dressing is ideal for private roads, car parks, farm tracks, tracks, country roads and driveways.  It is a heavy duty surface for vehicles to drive on.

It can also be used on footpaths.

There is a choice of chippings in colours and size of aggregate:

grey granite (10 or 6mm size) or a golden flint (10 or 6mm size).

The advantages of surface dressing:

  • Seals the road surface with a waterproof layer of bitumen
  • Helps prevents a major cause of asphalt road damage
  • Protects the underlying asphalt road structure which in turn improves road life expectancy and helps to reduce the overall cost of road construction and maintenance
  • A well laid surface can last more than 10 years, even where there is heavy traffic.
  • It also provides improved skid resistance, thereby reducing the risk of certain kinds of accidents.
  • Surface dressing can be used on all types of roads, from farm tracks and footpaths to major roads and motorways.
